Sunday Afternoon London Derby

After a successful start to the season, Arsenal return to Premier League action on Sunday for another London derby, this time against Chelsea at the Emirates.

This is an early-season London derby between the defending champions and a Chelsea side that has made an encouraging start under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Arsenal Form Overview

Arsenal have started the 2026/27 Premier League campaign strongly. They opened with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City before beating Aston Villa 1-0 away from home on Monday 31 August with Bukayo Saka scoring the winning goal in the 56th minute. They also won the Community Shield 3-0 against Manchester City before the league season began. Arsenal return home to host rival Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium for matchweek 3 of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign. The Gunners therefore enter this fixture with two Premier League wins and two clean sheets. Arsenal have earned a maximum 6 points, scoring four goals and conceding none,  showcasing outstanding defensive strength led by David Raya and Gabriel Magalhães.

Mikel Arteta’s team has also been strengthened during the summer, with Bruno Guimarães, Ezri Konsa and other additions increasing the depth available to the manager.

Chelsea Form Overview

Chelsea have made a positive start under Xabi Alonso following their opening-day win over Fulham with another positive result against Brighton. Their attacking quality has been encouraging, although defensive vulnerabilities remain an important concern ahead of a difficult trip to the Emirates.

Chelsea are walking into the derby in high spirits following their opening league match 3-2  win over Fulham and 4-3 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge on Matchday 2 (August 30).  Alonso’s side made a flying start with Roméo Lavia, Pedro Neto and João Pedro finding the net early before Cole Palmer added a decisive fourth goal in the 74th minute to seal the victory, though they will need much greater defensive structure against Arsenal’s good attack.

The defensive side remains a concern, Chelsea conceded three goals against Brighton and have now gone 18 league matches without a clean sheet, according to Reuters.

London Giants Set for a Fierce Battle

Historically, meetings between these London giants are fast, physical contests where every moment counts. Arsenal’s disciplined pressing and midfield control through Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard will test Alonso’s dynamic Chelsea attack. With both sides on maximum points early in the season, Sunday’s derby promises elite tactical intensity from the very first whistle.
